Come one; come all! Celebrate Black History Month this February at these local cultural events showcasing Black excellence through Black literature, Black farmers, Black-owned businesses, and the diversity of African American life. From thoughtful discussions to cultural performances, join others in our community to honor Black history in our nation, our state, and our city.

Each of these events promises to educate, inspire, and uplift. Most of these events are free, but a few, including the Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers event, charge a small fee.

9th Annual Black History for Children Book Exhibit 2024
When: Saturday, February 10, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The Pan-African Cultural Community and MAAT Bookstore, a mobile bookstore promoting Black history and literacy, welcome children and families to this literary event, where they will gift free Black History books. Inspire young minds with empowering stories.

Black History Breakfast at the Carver Library

Feed the body and mind with a continental breakfast and Black history. The Friends of the Carver and Carver Library, invites family and community to come out and enjoy a light breakfast and learn about the Black experience.

MAAT Buy Black Market

Support Black-owned businesses and enjoy cultural programming at the MAAT’s Buy Black Market every Saturday, year-round. Discover African-inspired cultural products, including clothing, books, natural body products, and more.

Black Farmer & Urban Gardener Interest Group

The Black Farmer & Urban Gardener Interest Group supports local agriculture, discusses policy impact, and fosters ongoing education and support for farmers and urban gardeners. Participate in hands-on projects, get ideas for spring planting, and learn about Black History of Black farmers and gardeners.

Movie Time – Big George Foreman

The Collins Garden Library honors Black History through a special showing of the inspiring tale of boxing legend George Foreman. Witness the extraordinary true story of his remarkable career and triumphant comeback.

Honoring Lincoln Elementary: Black Westside Voices

San Antonio was one of the first major cities to desegregate its schools following the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. Prior to desegregation, Edgewood I.S.D. opened Lincoln Elementary School to educate African American and Mexican American children with Elizabeth T. Wrenn as the school’s first principal and Edgewood’s first African American teacher and administrator. Hear first-hand from teachers and community leaders, highlighting the pivotal role Lincoln Elementary has played in fostering education and empowerment. 

Trade Talks: Buffalo Soldiers

Black History Month would not be complete without a Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers event honoring their legacy as the first peacetime all-Black regiments established by Congress in 1866. Learn about their significant role in the American West, their elite status, and decorated history.

Colors of San Antonio (CoSA) at Raindrop Cultural Center is an intercultural monthly education program designed to foster a deeper understanding of the diverse communities that call San Antonio home and provide a welcoming space where the public can explore and appreciate various cultures. Each gathering showcases a different country. This month, in honor of Black History Month, Nigeria is the featured guest country.

5th Annual San Antonio African American Book Festival

Join the 5th Annual San Antonio African American Book Festival on February 24, celebrating Black literature, representation, and economic empowerment. Featuring 60+ authors, this event promotes Black literacy and offers important insights from diverse perspectives. 

Black Growers & Farmers Jubilee

The first Black Growers Jubilee brings experts in hydroponics, seed-to-soil, community development together for their inaugural event. Farmers, growers, and gardeners of all ages do not want miss this chance to connect, collaborate, and learn from diverse growing experiences.
